Career options after NEET

The Medical Field is a very prestigious profession to pursue as a career. Doctors and teachers are highly respected in the Indian society. We should choose career options based upon our passion. NEET, which stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is considered as a doorway to enter the medical field in India. The minimum educational requirement for this exam is class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects.

Before 2018 every state used to have separate entrance exams for medical programmes but from 2018 onwards it was declared that admissions to AYUSH (acronym of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) courses would be done through NEET exam only. So in this blog we will explore the various career options after the NEET entrance examination.


The following are career options after NEET entrance exam:

  • MBBS - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
  • BDS – Bachelor of Dental Surgery
  • Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
  • Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery
  • Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy

1. MBBS - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

The minimum requirement to get admission in MBBS college is that you should have 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology and English in the 12th grade examination and also you should qualify the NEET entrance exam. The duration of the MBBS course is 5.5 years including 1 year of mandatory internship. You will get to learn pre and para-clinical subjects such as biochemistry, physiology, Human anatomy, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology.

As a student, you will have first-hand experience with patients for five years, which will give you a broader understanding of various types of diseases and their cure.

2. BDS – Bachelor of Dental Surgery

B.D.S. is an undergraduate programme which comes under Dentistry field. Total time required to get a BDS degree is around 4 to 5 years based on the college without an internship. BDS graduates are known as Dentists. Lectures, demonstrations, seminars, and conferences are part of the course. Dental candidates learn various treatment methods, such as surgical procedures, dental anatomy, dental materials, oral pathology, pedodontics, oral medicine, and radiology. It follows the same educational requirements as MBBS.


3. BAMS – Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery

In BAMS, traditional knowledge of Ayurvedic Medicine is combined with modern sciences. The duration of the BAMS course is around 4-5 years with 1 year internship. You will get to learn about Ayurvedic Medicine and Sanskrit language in this course. The minimum requirement to get admission in BAMS college is that you should have 50% marks in physics, chemistry, and biology in the 12th grade examination. Ayurvedic physicians and Surgeons are known as Vaidyas and Shalyachikitsaka respectively.


4. BHMS – Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery

BHMS is a five and a half year undergraduate programme consisting of four and a half years of academics and one year of internship. A minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 is required for admission to BUMS programme. Candidates must have taken physics, chemistry, and biology in 12th grade. Homeopathy is an ancient form of medicine that combines holistic practices and approaches to cure various diseases. In India, homeopathy is regulated by the National Institute of Homeopathy. Many experts consider homeopathy to be the safest and most effective medical science in the world. Therefore it is the best option to pursue a career after MBBS.


5. BUMS – Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery
Bachelors of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) is an undergraduate course in the field of Unani medicine. Unani medicine dates back thousands of years and has been practiced in many parts of the world mainly in southeast asia. Medieval Persian and Arabs were the primary creators of this medicine, which traces its roots back to Hippocrates. This UG course is around 4.5 year-long with an extra 1 year of internship. The basic eligibility criteria to get the admission to BUMS course is qualifying the 12th with 50% marks. The candidate must have physics, chemistry and biology in 12th class. In the admissions process, students who are proficient in Urdu language are also given priority. Unani physicians and Surgeons are known as Hakims.
6. BPT – Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Basic topics taught in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy programme include Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Exercise Therapy, and Electrotherapy. You will also learn about general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, neurology, and cardio-respiratory, which will prepare you for various conditions you will face in the field of physiotherapy. It is a around 4.5 year UG programme with 6 months of internship. This course also has the same academic requirements as MBBS.
